What is all-consuming.com?
All-consuming.com is a pictorial journal of my consumer expenditures in 2001. I will represent in a photograph, and record the date, time, location, description of and opinions on, every outlay of money for a product or service this year.
Who am I?
I am Stephanie. I live in LA. I have two cats.
How are the images created?
Images on all-consuming.com are almost entirely my own, made with a Canon Powershot G1 digital camera and stored on 16MB, 64MB and 128MB Compact Flash memory cards (very good purchases indeed.) The exceptions will be obvious (for example, I cannot take my own x-rays.) I am using Adobe Photoshop on a Apple Power MacG4 to correct the color, exposure and composition. In rare cases where a picture only tells 500 or 250 words, I might create a simple collage. The images may directly or indirectly reflect the item(s) purchased. That is at my discretion and entirely dependent on my mood. The square thumbnails are not complete representations of the full rectangular images (and I may instead make a thumbnail-sized detail image from the source photograph.)
How would one describe this project?
All-consuming.com is a data set of one consumer's spending patterns - mine. The website might be seen by some as a comment on the excess of western capitalist culture. More likely it is a comment on my own excess. All-consuming.com is not meant to be a diary, but is one by default.
Note:
This journal is as accurate and honest as possible. I have tried not to alter my life for this project, therefore the quality of the images may vary widely. However, all-consuming.com is not about an individual photo, rather the sum of all of them (see the Mosaic.) Or maybe I'm just making excuses.
Who are you?
I don't know, but look at the pictures anyway. Maybe you can see something I cannot. Let me know what you think. all_consuming@hotmail.com
